Nine

FRIDAY. MRS. SPIT would be back, and Julie still didn’t have her “poor work” papers signed. She also hadn’t copied the spelling words or written the paper about playing with marbles in school. A lot of unfinished work had piled up. Julie’s stomach tightened into knots as she walked into the kitchen for breakfast. Maybe Ms. Eddie had forgotten to leave the note about the marble assignment and spelling words for Mrs. Spattelli.

By the time they had started dinner last night, Mom was home. Alexia was still in her room, and Mom told her to come to the table even if she wasn’t eating. Bean said Alexia made Julie cry, and Alexia told him to shut up and mind his business, which made Dad yell. Alexia stomped away from the table. Then Mom said Dad should be eating something healthier than cheeseburgers, and they both got mad.

After dinner, Julie had let Bean make a kite picture with her paper scraps while she finished Glenda’s card. Julie didn’t want to disturb Mom after the scene at dinner, so she found some sparkly thin ribbon in the hallway closet Mom called the junk closet. It looked perfect hanging down the side like streamers. Inside, Julie wrote: “Hoppy birdthay. Love, Julie.”
